Detailed Analysis on How Facebook Effects Today's Society

In today's 21st Century, new media as a whole has elevated dramatically since its origins. Every source of electronics that we use has a new media whether it be Flipboard, Instagram, Snapchat, or even Pinterest. I specifically will be touching on the new media, "Facebook". Ever since it was successfully launched in 2004, Facebook Incorporate has been a game changer in today's society. Reforming the ways that family and friends connect with one another, allowing outside companies to advertise to a larger group of people, or enlightening users on the world-wise news have been just a few of the many positive effects that Facebook has brought to this generation. Despite carrying along all these positive impacts on today's society, Facebook does have its fair share of negative effects. Some notable negative effects that Facebook has brought along are that they have been tracking users personal information, causing users to be in a "foul mood" and even causing users to feel self-conscious. Now all new media has its ups and downs; however, users of these new media and Facebook specifically have been using it so often that they are blinded by some of the effects that it has done to them. For this topic, I will be performing a thorough analysis on some of the positive and negative effects that Facebook has on today's society. I will be surveying students around the Baruch campus and seeing how everybody feels on the new media Facebook.

    This is an interesting topic for your paper given all the controversies surrounding Facebook at the moment. I have to say with recent events that it has become apparent that Facebook is not as transparent as it seems. Just today, it was confirmed that Facebook knowingly inflated its video view statistics which had a direct consequence of media organizations firing a majority of their writers in favor of more costly video producers. When these organizations found out the real number of views which was much less due to Facebook's metric error, video producers were fired as well. For now, we can only wait and see what Mark Zuckerberg decides to do with Facebook and how he will handle with these scandals.

Advice

As hired to improve Baruch College, I believe that new media is one of the most impactful tools that can better the university. I suggest that Baruch College starts making a blogging site as well to relate and interact with their students. As proven throughout the semester, blogs have demonstrated an environment where fellow classmates are able to bond and understand one another's point of view on different situations. In addition, this allows Baruch College to actually listen to their students and see what they can do to improve the university, or what resource should be provided in order to have students enjoy their time better. There are over 15,000 students here at Baruch and by being able to just hear from them, this will truly improve the university as a whole and provide insightful feedback regarding the university.
