Blog: Social Networking Sites

In today's society, everyone uses at least one if not more of the top four social networking sites. The top four social networking sites are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. They each present a unique environment where users are able to find their needs, interact with family and friends, and keep themselves updated with world news. These four social networking sites operate in a similar fashion; however, they each present features that allow them to be special and constantly used.

Facebook, the first social networking site to reach 1 billion active users, is considered the leader of these four social networking site has evolved tremendously over the years. Starting off as just a simple communication platform to connect family and friends has grown into a multi-billion dollar company where they partner with other companies to distribute ads, publish worldwide news, live stream important events and so much more. The communication aspect of Facebook has transcended from allowing users to use a simple chat to be able to have video calls, play games with friends, have group meetings and the list goes on. Not only that but also in recent years, Facebook has created a marketplace where users are able to purchase and sell items creating an all in one social networking site.

Instagram, who many know it as the "gram", has attracted a new wave of millennials where they are able to post a simple picture and let the magic happen from there. Celebrities, businesses and common users are all able to operate the same functions and let their picture tell their story. By posting a picture and captioning it, a plethora of celebrities are now using the platform to promote products and services because of the simplicity and usage rate of it. Currently owned by Facebook, Instagram has evolved from its beginning where users are now able to add a collage of photos, build a photography portfolio and even demonstrate their daily lives to the public. Instagram essentially brings everybody closer by having a specific page or person that everybody likes and connects them through chats and pictures.

Twitter, a social networking site that is so simple and straight to the point, that even our president uses it. The features of Twitter is simple, write a sentence or two to either voice your opinion or share what's on your mind to the world. It has enabled sports stars, celebrities and friends and family to be able to keep up with one another and see how everybody around them is acting. Twitter focuses heavily on their hashtags to keep users having their content relevant and easy to search up.

Last but not least, we have LinkedIn. LinkedIn is much different than the other 3 social networking site where this is for your professional portfolio. It is a social networking site where you express yourself and your experiences and has recruiters and other high position executives see who you are and what you have to offer to a company. It is a site where you attempt to keep all of your personal life out and attempt to manifest what you have to offer. It is a place where people are willing to offer you a position, where you do not have to reach out yourself.

  1. Hi Kevin, I also think everyone does have more than one social network and perhaps we use one more frequently than another. I know I have a preference for Twitter because of its simplicity. What's yours?

Privacy

New media has provided a great sense of mass communication for people all around the world; however, this does spark a major issue in today's society. That major issue is privacy and confidentiality. When a social media account is created, users are typically asked for private information regarding their personal biography, lifestyle and family and friends. In almost all of these new media, you are given the option of whether or not you want only your friends to see it, or you want the entire social media community to be able to see it. Over the years, many users are claiming that their privacy is not so "private" anymore considering that there are many loopholes for others to be able to learn about your private information. You can always use a friends account to view this person's private information and because of that, it defeats the purpose of a private account. Confidentiality is another issue considering that nothing is confidential. A private group on Facebook...

P2P

What exactly is file sharing? Well file sharing is the practice or ability to transfer a file through the internet or network to another computer. The purpose of this is so that one could transfer the file to another and provide them the opportunity and capability to view or edit this file. File sharing has been widely used across the world for every individual who has access to a computer. P2P file sharing, also known as peer to peer, allows users to share files and digital media over the internet or through a P2P software. It is not just an ordinary word document type of sharing, but actually the ability to share movies, music, games and books where ordinary file sharing would not allow. Examples of P2P sharing are softwares such as Limewire, FrostWire, Gnutella, Emule and so on. From the examples listed, I personally have used some of them from a while back for downloading music and games. However, fast forward to the modern century and understanding all of the work and times spent ...

Creativity

Ever since the creation of new media, this has allowed users and content creators all across the globe to be able to express their opinions and their work as well. New media has created a plethora of social media platforms and with the additions of applications like Photoshop, Premier and other editing visual apps, this has pushed content creators to work hard and produce better content. As a result of this, new media is able to foster creativity because creating the content is one thing, but being able to publish and show the worldwide is another. A prime example of new media fostering creativity was when a user on Youtube created a music video of Disney characters dancing in the song "Crank That Soulja Boy". Mashups "a re made by editing together snippets of animated movies and TV shows. The finished products look like music videos in which the cartoon characters do the singing" (Barnes, 3). Creative video creators are always passionate about combining the best ...
